Second Grade, Finance, and the Production of Steak Donuts

When a JA volunteer enters a classroom for the first time, no one knows the type of impact the experience will have on the students, the teacher or the volunteer. Justine Waldron, education and public relations manager at Junior Achievement of Western New York in Buffalo, told the following story.Sharon Kensy, a second-grade teacher at St. Christopher School of Tonawanda, New York, has had a JA volunteer teach in her classroom since 2007. When Mrs. Kensy's class received a new JA volunteer this past fall, she was reunited with one of her previous students.

Kelsey McArthur, who works at Employee Benefits Concepts, volunteered for JA for the first time and chose to teach JA Career SuccessTM at Depew High School. When viewing the volunteer opportunities further, Kelsey noticed that a second grade class at St. Christopher School needed a volunteer too, so she volunteered--not knowing it was the class of Mrs. Kensy, her second grade teacher.

"I had such an incredible experience and I know I will be a Junior Achievement volunteer for many years to come!" Kelsey said.

Kelsey introduced the students to production and the process of manufacturing a product. "We used donuts as an example of a product and based the class off of that idea," said Kelsey. "I ask the students to think of a new kind of donut. Little Ben told me that he came up with the most delicious new donut flavor: a steak donut!"

Mrs. Kensy admired Kelsey's teaching skills, was pleased to have Kelsey in her class, and complimented JA. "I was very happy to welcome her back to our school," said Mrs. Kensy. "JA truly is a great program. It gives our students some insight into how a community works!"

Reflecting back on her volunteer experience with JA, Kelsey said: "One of my favorite moments was my very first day when one of the students told me that she was going to watch me walk to my car from the classroom window and make sure I got there OK.
